Abstract
The Catcher in the Rye is a classic novel written by American writer J.D.Salinger, which described Holden’s nearly three-day experiences and feelings with his own view after being expelled from school when wandering in New York City. It also criticized the hypocrisy and deceptive acts of the adult world with a vision of young people. As soon as this so called “modern classic novel” released, it has been favored by a wide range of readers for more than half a century. There is also a wide range of analysis and interpretation from literary critics, especially in terms of main focal points such as mental analysis, language features, symbolic theme, growth theme, and characters contrast. However, with the worsening in environmental and ecology issues in recent years, as well as the birth and development of eco-criticism, many domestic and foreign classical literatures have also been re-analyzed from the natural ecological perspective. In view of this, this article, initiating a new analysis perspective with the ecological criticism, combining the symbol described in this novel, break down the ecological thinking in this book which proposed a return to nature.
